Mislabeling: Breaking Free from Negative Perceptions

Hello there once again. I am back and I am so sorry, I didn’t mean to be gone for that long, but sincerely, all the while I was away I couldn’t stop thinking about you. I HAVE MISSED YOU!!! Pardon my inconsistency.

I am not quite certain about the topic I should give this post, but hopefully, it comes in the end. So while I have been away, a lot of work has been going on in and through me and I am really grateful for that. A few things have changed in my life, and it has really shaken some tables and shifted some things around me, but it is well.

I am sure it isn’t just me who goes through those times when we want to or are about to do something very crucial or take a step and it is really not the task or endeavour we are thinking about, but the effect of the task. Most times when this is negative, it keeps us second-guessing for as long as possible till we finally lose the will to actually do that thing. More often than not, I find myself in that space always thinking, what would happen if I said this thing? How would people look at me? What image of me would they have in their minds and all those scary, numbing and paralyzing thoughts. In the little time that I was away, I found that these thoughts, while they aren’t all bad could even save a life in some situations. But they have a downside to them. Their persistent negativity can become a stronghold in anyone’s mind and if one is not careful, we would remain ever small using less than little potential. They just may be the reason you don’t do that thing that your life actually depends on. But I pray something like that will not be the reason you don’t actualize your potential and fulfil destiny. Actually, may there be no reason you don’t fulfil destiny.

Frankly, I don’t even know what to call this or what name to give it. But I know it has been a constant problem with me for a very long time. I read an article somewhere recently. It said that we often mislabel things because they are a deviation from what we call culture, tradition or norm. I totally agree with this because I am a victim of this so-called “mislabeling”. For instance, an outspoken and intelligent person who in a class always answers questions. To the other students, this one student may be labelled as an “ITK” as we commonly call it or a showoff. Or a strong-willed person being labelled as stubborn because, in that society, your will is not supposed to matter or be relevant and probably completely absent. For me, I think this was where the problem began, and slowly, I began to shrink in gradually. Actually putting my lamp in a bucket under the table to avoid it being mislabeled and to avoid offending others. To avoid it being called disturbing.

But in the words of Marianne Williamson: “You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

This has to be the shortest post I have made here, but I make this post with every sense of awareness. As many before me have shone freely and continue to do so, I am allowed to shine and liberate others as well. So as I leave you with this, not shrinking or cowering about failing, what may or may not be, like the light of the world, I am going out there to shine. So dearly beloved, will you shine with me?
